Cut String Staircases have the ability to dramatically change a hallway or room, and give a grand feel to a property. The newel strings are cut to follow the treads and risers which can be either mitred back into the string or returned into a decorative bracket.

The strings on a staircase are the sides which the treads and risers are housed into, they are boards that enclose the treads and risers, basically they are the edge of the stairs meaning that they are vital for holding the staircase together. There are a variety of different strings. In a closed string staircase, the edges of the steps will be hidden. In a cut or open string staircase, the side profile of the steps will be visible or even overhang the string.

A cut string staircase can be either softwood or hardwood, Pine can be a great option and is the cheapest timber, it's light, easy to work with and looks good painted, stained, waxed or varnished.
