Sometimes referred to Helical staircases, curved staircases are the most elegant and graceful of all staircase designs. The shape of these stairs leads the user upstairs in a graceful arc.

A  spiral staircase does not have a central post and  has a very tight inner radius, as small as a few inches, with inner handrails for extra support.

Curved staircases have a fixed post that the stair treads revolve around, with two stringers that flow around with the treads fixed to connect them together.

Due to the shape of these stairs, they need a lot more space for them to fit and so are not suitable for all properties.

Usually, the handrail to these staircases are made to follow the same curve as the stringers. The handrails are normally continuous with no newel posts at the top and bottom which makes the handrail flow right from the very bottom all the way up and around the landing.

Curved staircases are not just a traditional feature, they can also be very contemporary with curved glass balustrading, giving them a nice open feel but making them a real focal point. They are also great for adding period features to a property when using wooden turned spindles or black iron spindles.

If the focal point of your home is the staircase, installing a customised curved staircase is a great way to make a stunning first impression. Curved staircases often appear grand, and they can help to add a touch of drama to a space. They also often take up less space, which can help the entrance itself feel larger.

Along with the aesthetic reasons to choose a curved staircase, they can be more comfortable and easier to climb. Curved staircases provide you with a bit more “breathing room” where straight staircases are often steep. If you have children or an elderly loved one living in your home, you can easily build landings into curved staircases to make the treads a bit wider.
