The main purpose of a staircase is simply to provide an easy means of moving between levels of any

property. In ancient times, houses and shelters were made up of only one storey, but it was soon realised that the area above ground level could be utilised to increase the amount of space a structure could offer. This is when the need for staircases arose. Today, stairs are found in almost all homes, and come in all shapes and sizes.

When constructing your staircase, you can choose from a variety of materials, including wood, metal, and even glass. It all depends on your personal taste and what will best complement your home.

Famous staircases around the world.

The Grand Opera Staircase in Paris, France, is one of the most famous staircases in the world. Located in the Palais Garnier, home to the Paris Opera, the staircase was designed by Charles Garnier and was completed in 1875.

The Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, has a very famous staircase made of wrought iron and  is over 300 steps high.  Built by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 World's Fair, the tower and its staircase has become an iconic symbol of Paris.

Neptune's Staircase at Banavie, near Fort William just north of Loch Linnhe, is the longest staircase loch in Britain, lifting boats 64 feet (20m).  Maintained by Scottish Canals, it consists of eight locks, each 180 feet (55 m) by 40 feet (12 m), and takes boats about 90 minutes to pass through the system. The staircase was built between 1801 and 1803 by Thomas Telford as part of the Caledonian Canal. The Banavie staircase is often used by boats traveling to and from the Inner and Outer Hebrides, as it avoids the need to navigate the dangerous Corran Narrows.

The tallest staircase in the world is located in Switzerland. The steps run alongside the Niesen

mountain railway, which leads to the top of the 1.5 mile high mountain. This stairway contains no less

than 11,674 steps and is undoubtedly the tallest staircase in the world.

The longest staircase in the world is the Great Staircase at the Palace of Versailles in France which has 1,786 steps.

The most Famous Spiral staircases is the Loretto Chapel, New Mexico. When it was constructed in the 19th century, the Loretto Chapel needed a staircase to the second floor choir loft but there seemed to be no room for one. Legend has it that the sisters of the chapel prayed to St. Joseph, the carpenter, and he answered their prayers with a miraculous spiral staircase that appeared overnight. No one knows for sure how the staircasenwas built, but it has been a popular tourist attraction for over a century.
